Author Guidelines


The Journal of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Education: Innovations and Research publishes peer-reviewed:
  • real-world case studies and other innovations in education
  • research articles from educational research that inform the readers on teaching and learning endeavors in STEM
  • articles that discuss recent developments that have an impact on STEM education in areas such as policy and industry needs
The case studies may include color photographs, charts, and other visual aids in order to bring engineering topics alive. The research articles will focus on innovations that have been implemented in educational institutions. These case studies and articles are expected to be used by faculty members in universities, four-year colleges, two-year colleges, and high schools. In addition, the journal provides information that would help the STEM instructors in their educational mission by publishing:
  • a comprehensive list of articles that appeared in other journals
  • grant announcements related to STEM education
  • advertisements from companies

Case Studies:
Cases accepted for publication will deal with issues important to STEM practitioners. The journal not only emphasizes cases based on field research, but also accepts secondary-sourced cases. The journal encourages case studies that cut across the different STEM areas as well as cover non-technical issues such as finance, cost, management, risk, safety, etc. The case studies are expected to be framed around problems facing a decision-maker in an organization. Previously published cases or articles (except those appearing as a short overview in proceedings, posted on web pages, or presented in conferences or workshops) are not eligible for consideration. The journal would accept cases synthesized from author experience. Cases must be accompanied by a comprehensive "Instructor's Guide," which includes at least the following elements:
  • a one-page synopsis of the case
  • identification of the intended course, audience, and any associated readings or theoretical materials that teachers might draw on to relate the case to their field or course
  • assignment questions for students, accompanied by a full analysis of each question
  • an epilogue or follow-up information about the decision actually taken

Research Articles:
Articles accepted for publication will describe experiments, innovations, awards, and programs involving STEM education. The articles are expected to describe the details of the experiments, provide visual materials that make the experiment clear to the reader, and discuss the impact on implementation in classrooms. Articles need to include an evaluation or assessment of the benefit of the instructional innovation. Articles that describe programs that promote STEM education are also welcome.


Please read our submission guidelines carefully. Manuscripts that do not comply with these requirements will not be placed in review until they have been revised accordingly.

Publication fee
Because The Journal of STEM Education is a nonprofit journal, we must charge a page fee to cover our operational costs and ensure our continued ability to serve as a venue for sharing educational innovations in STEM. Therefore, a fee will be assessed at the following rates:

  • For manuscripts submitted before November 1, 2015: $395 for the first eight (8) pages plus the author biographies, and $35 for each additional page.
  • For manuscripts submitted on or after November 1, 2015: $495 for the first ten (10) pages plus the author biographies, and $45 for each additional page.

Authors will receive an invoice for their articles once their manuscripts are in the proof stage.

Please note that this fee can become substantial for long articles. Therefore, to help authors anticipate the length of their articles once formatted, we provide the following guidelines: If submitted according to the APA formatting guidelines provided below (double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font, 1-inch margins, figures and tables included in-text), articles will be approximately eight pages in the final layout if their manuscripts are no more than 20 double-spaced pages, including references, figures, and tables. Although we will still accept longer articles, we do strongly encourage authors to submit manuscripts that are as concise as possible to avoid high costs to themselves.

Submission Guidelines
  • An electronic version of the case study/article as a PDF should be submitted via the online system at Authors can register for free accounts and should carefully follow the detailed instructions available within the online submission process.

  • All authors are required to suggest four potential expert reviewers. This can be done via email or uploaded as a supplementary document when the article/case study is submitted. Decisions regarding acceptance are made based on two or more reviews.

  • The article must comply with APA style manual guidelines. This means:
    1. There should be parenthetical in-text citations, rather than footnotes;
    2. The reference list should be carefully written in APA format;
    3. The manuscript should be double-spaced, in 12-point Times New Roman font, with 1-inch margins;
    4. All hyperlinks should be activated and ready to click;
    5. Figures and tables should be placed in the text, rather than at the end;
    6. Italics, rather than underlining, should be used (except in hyperlinks); and
    7. Cases submitted for review should be accompanied by a cover letter from the corresponding author, including the following paragraph:

      "In submitting this case to the Journal of STEM Education: Innovations and Research for widespread distribution in print and electronic media, I (we) certify that it is original work based on real events in a real organization. It has not been published and is not under review elsewhere. Copyright holders have given permission for the use of any material not permitted by the 'Fair Use Doctrine.' The host organization has signed a release authorizing the publication of all information with understandings of confidentiality."

Upon acceptance of the case study or article, the authors have to provide a manuscript that does not contain any photographs or charts embedded in the text. Original photographs or digital images of at least 300dpi resolution must be provided to the journal. Typically, photographs submitted from the World Wide Web are not of sufficient quality. They also have to sign a copyright form transferring copyright.


Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The authors are aware of the new publication fee and formatting and style requirements noted in the Author Guidelines (updated September 2015).
  2. The submission file is in Adobe PDF format.
  3. The submission has not been previously published nor is it before another journal for consideration; or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor.
  4. Author identification has been removed for blind peer review, and "Author" and year have been used in the bibliography and footnotes, instead of authors' names, titles, etc. The author's name has been removed from the document's Properties, which in Microsoft Word is found in the File menu.
  5. A list of potential reviewers has been prepared and will be submitted as a supplementary file in Step 4 of the submission process. Reviewers are experts in the submission's subject matter. They will preferably have some experience with academic journals.

Copyright for articles published in this journal is retained by the Institute for STEM Education and Research with first publication rights granted to the journal. By virtue of their appearance in this open access journal, articles are free to use, with proper attribution, in educational and other non-commercial settings.
